I really like the cycle paths and the blue signs for bikes that give distances and directions. I think it would be great if on some signposts, below in green, we also included directions and distances by foot and bike to local parks.
I know on Whitaker Road, by the Johnsons Dry Cleaners, they have a signpost there. It would be great if it showed in green the distance to Normanton Park. Normanton Park is a great recreational space, and if it was signposted it would support the bed and breakfasts along Burton Road – families and guests could spend the afternoon at the park. This could also be possible for other parks such as Markeaton Park and Elvaston Country Park on the river cycle route.
I have had some more ideas about cycle parking. Initially, cycle parking was to encourage and support businesses and shoppers in the city centre and on retail parks. What if a few were positioned by the Everlast Sports Village, Pride Park Stadium, Derby Arena, Oakwood Leisure Centre and the new Moorways Sports Village?
If we added 50 to 100 bike spaces in each location it would provide another good way to travel to these sports facilities. I know the football leagues would encourage people to travel by bikes to play 5-a-side football at the Powerleague in Derby. I think some fans would want to cycle to watch Derby County on match days. And I think Derby Arena, Oakwood and Moorways would be great places to have bike spaces to encourage people to cycle in and enjoy the sports facilities.
It would be great to expand the cycle parking idea to include sports facilities and key areas in the city centre and retail parks. Maybe Everlast and Derby County could sponsor the cycle parking areas by their facilities?
