I've just spent some time this afternoon thinking of ideas for Babington Lane, Gower Street, St Peters Street, London Road, Osmaston Road, and The Spot. The ideas aim to improve the area for cyclists, bus users, the disabled, and late-night workers.
A cycle lane along Babington Lane which follows the flow of traffic and is clearly visible.
Widen the bend in the road by London Road and Osmaston Road, by The Money Shop. Many of the big buses can't fit around the bend comfortably with cars going the other way. There have been a number of times when buses have nearly hit the side of cars.
Supersize the bus stops, definitely on Gower Street by Hunters, and either by the Post Office or on The Spot, opposite Ladbrokes.
A bike safe or cycle secure point in the Matalan car park – something similar to the secure bike parking facilities to the left of the train station. Something with closed fencing around – or anything that obscures vision – with a roof, a gated door with maybe a key fob entry, stands inside, and a security camera. This is really popular at the train station and could maybe contain 50 bikes in 4 car spaces.
This idea is really important. Five-minute parking bays to pick up friends, family, and disabled people, located by the taxi ranks on London Road and Osmaston Road and along Babington Lane and Gower Street. The city's buses stop running at certain times and on Sundays. When I worked in the Derbion, my mum would pick me up after work on Sundays. She has also recently had a double knee operation and when she pops into NatWest in St Peters Quarter she likes me to drop her off as close as possible. I think this parking bay should be incorporated by the taxi ranks. This would make it safer for employees working late and customers, or those who have had operations, to make getting home a lot easier.
