Should the Big Screen Return to Derby City?

Tennis match at Wimbledon

Written by Murray:

I know there used to be a pop-up Big Screen in the Market Place – it showed Puccini's Tosca back in 2007. It would be great if the Big Screen made a comeback.

It could show Wimbledon each year and there could be squash, strawberries and cream for families. Imagine everyone in the Market Place cheering and waving their Team GB flags.

It could show the Commonwealth Games 2022 from 28 July to 8 August. Bunting could be hung all around the Market Place with GB flags on them, along with the other countries of the Commonwealth. The restaurants could bring out food and refreshments throughout the day. It would be great if we could do something similar for the Olympics in 2024, too.

We could also show films like the Back to the Future trilogy, and opera and theatre shows throughout the Summer for everyone.

  1. What a great suggestion!! It would bring communities together, drum up business for local Café's & restaurants!! A lot of people can't afford to visit Wimbledon, Olympics or Commonwealth Games, so why not bring it to the people? I for one would love to attend an event like this with friends & family 😃

  2. The temporary screen was rather an ugly intrusion into the market place, especially when switched off!
I suggest it should be included within the fabric of the proposed new Derby Playhouse, where it could also serve to promote plays and events and would not look out of place..
