I spent some time last night thinking about more potential improvements that could be made in the area of the Spot.
Cycle Secure Point at Matalan Car Park
I thought it might be a good idea to establish a new cycle secure point at the Matalan car park. I’m aware that this car park is owned by the Derbion. So when I popped in to the Derbion last week, I went to the customer service desk and told them of my idea and asked that they pass it on to their management team.
I also added that they could perhaps add some secure bike facilities in their basement car park. They have lots of room down there, and I don't think cyclists would disrupt traffic too much when coming in from Traffic Street.
Cycle Secure in between Amplifon and PureGym?
I think another good spot to have a secure bike facility is in between Amplifon and PureGym.
Just having bike stands on their own can attract unwanted attention. My friend, who is a postman and cycles regularly into town every day, has had his bike stolen in the city centre. It would be great if some bike secure facilities, like at the train station, were added to the Spot, replacing the basic bike stands there already.
20 mph signs and a traffic calming / speed bump on London Road?
I would also like to add my experience of waiting to the left of the taxis on London Road, opposite Cash Generator.
I have worked in the Derbion for fourteen years. I would often wait by the taxis to be picked up by my mum, as there were no buses on Sunday. Quite often, someone with a high-performance car would use the strip of road from Wilkos to Cash Generator to drive aggressively, ‘showing off’ their high-performance car. Often there would be people crossing the road, on the bend by the zebra crossing, or just waiting like I was. This reckless driving could cause an accident. It could also make it uncomfortable for shoppers and visitors to have young gangs showing off their high-performance cars.
I would look at some way of slowing them down and making London Road and Osmaston Road a 20-mph speed limit area. Maybe there should be a lowered speed bump by Cosmo, or something to slow traffic down to 20 mph while not hindering buses.
I know this is something that has been done successfully on Mill Hill Lane, to help slow traffic down close to the primary schools and churches.
