So it was Eurovision at the weekend. I wanted the UK or Azerbaijan to win, as those were the countries whose songs I liked the most. But realistically I thought it would be Spain or the Ukraine who’d win.
It was in fact Ukraine who won, thanks to the audience votes. Despite what some people might think, it was a great show of support from Europe.
Anyway, it got me thinking: why doesn’t Derby do something similar to the Eurovision? We could get a stage set up at the Market Place, or perhaps a park, and have people perform.
And it wouldn’t be limited to just singers. How about poets, artists, dancers, etc, take part as well? It wouldn’t be a singing contest; it would be a performing arts contest.
We would of course have judges. And maybe those in attendance could vote too.
The winner of the event could then possibly become Derby’s ‘laureate’ if you like. Maybe they could be commissioned to produce a number of works over the course of the year, until the next contest, to help show Derby as a cultural force.
Having our own contest would be good for two reasons.
First, it would give all the local talent a platform to showcase what they can do. This would show everyone how rich Derby is with the arts.
Second, it would be an excellent event where people can relax and have a good time with friends and family. If the event takes place in the summer, the weather will be good. You could also have food and drink available from stalls, bringing in some extra cash for local businesses.
But the most important thing of all: what do we call it? Derbyvision? Hmm, I think we can do better than that.
What are your ideas for names?
