Some Ideas for the New Market Hall

Written by Murray:

I’ve read an article in the Derby Telegraph about the new Market Hall. The pictures look really good and I think this will be a great location in Derby to visit.

I would like to add some ideas that I think would be good for the Market Hall.

Language Learning for Adults

I think it would be great if there was adult learning held in an open classroom area. It would be great to have French, Spanish and other holiday languages in the afternoons.

The students could get a hot drink, sandwich or a bit of cake in the café there, and also visit the market stalls. I know from visiting the Market Hall before the renovation began that there was a lady from France selling French bread. This would be great for French learners, as it would give them an opportunity to practice conversation.

Adding Small Business Units

How about adding some other small business units inside the Market Hall? I think it would be great to add some small businesses there e.g. maybe a recruitment company, a hairdresser, a beautician, a soup kitchen and maybe even a physio.

Support for the Community

How about also including something to support the community. I think it would be great for the council to add a walk-in resident helpdesk – a place where residents can come in and get advice and help on a range of council services.

CycleSecure for Parking Bikes

My final idea would be to have a CycleSecure area for parking bikes, either inside the market hall or outside. Maybe one of the cabins could be replaced by a CycleSecure area. I think this would encourage cyclists to park there, as it’s a great spot that’s close to many things such as the Council House, the QUAD, the shops in Osnabruck Square and the shops along the Cornmarket.
